Please read the following about our cattle for sale

All cows are sold as exposed to Highland Spice’s bulls.  Exact dates of exposure and bulls depend on the cow (for example, Jillian has not been exposed to her brother, Highland Spice Hickory, but others have).  Contact us for details.  Dates of exposure are from about June 13, 2024 to about August 10, 2024.  Cows will be available to pick up once the calves on them are weaned in the fall.  If a female is not confirmed pregnant in the fall prior to being picked up, buyer may at his/her option choose to receive two straws of heifer-sexed semen from Highland Spice Hickory (or an unrelated bull) to breed the female after she goes to her new home, and $500.00 will be deducted from the purchase price.

No females for sale may be flushed/aspirated to produce embryos for the buyer or for any subsequent owner without seller’s express written consent.  No bulls may be collected without seller’s express written consent.  Embryo production or semen collection goals, if any, should be discussed with Seller before purchase.

Buyer and Seller will agree to terms of sale, which include a 50 percent downpayment to hold the cattle; the balance of the purchase price at pick-up.  Cattle will be sound and healthy when they leave Highland Spice with appropriate paperwork to travel.  If they are not in sound, healthy condition as determined by a licensed veterinarian prior to leaving Highland Spice, the sale will be voided and the deposit refunded to Buyer.  It is highly recommended, and in some cases required, that cows are sold in pairs with a buddy for transport/adjustment to their new home.  Transporters must be approved by seller.

It has been hot in Wyoming this Summer, and we have all survived so far.  HOWEVER, THESE CATTLE ARE NOT ACCUSTOMED TO PERSISTENT HEAT, DO NOT FULLY SHED OUT, AND ARE NOT AVAILABLE TO STATES THAT TOUCH THE GULF OF MEXICO, ANY HOT SOUTHERN STATES, OR TO ANY BUYER WHOSE OPERATION WE DO NOT BELIEVE WILL FIT THE CATTLE.  We do occasionally sell cattle to responsible breeders in the South, but not these cattle.

We try to be upfront with our buyers so that they can make informed decisions, and we have happy customers.  We try to make sure the cattle we have for sale are a good fit for their new homes, as we do think a lot of our cattle and hope to establish a relationship with our buyers which persists beyond the sale.  Call Angie with questions and for more information on these private treaty listings – 307-620-5828.  Thank you!

Blacktail is one of the prettiest females that came with the Flathead Farm herd acquisition in 2022. She is thick, deep, built similarly to Jefferson — but a tad more feminine. She is everything we love about Highlands, all wrapped up in a golden yellow package. We call Blacktail “Siamese,” because one side of her udder has two teats that grew together at some point during her development in-utero. Both quarters on that side are fully functional, but the Siamese teat is twice as big as if it were a single teat. If you milk it, two streams of milk come out! Blacktail’s mom has a normal udder, so do her paternal sisters in our herd. So, our vet has opined and we believe that her condition was developmental/environmental — not genetic. The “normal” side of her udder is great. Milk quantity is appropriate. Siamese is fairly easy going when she calves and will let us handle her after calving without a lot of drama. The buyer would need to be prepared to watch her and make sure the calf gets on the “Siamese” side within a few days after birth to keep that side good. This year the calf went to that side first, and we didn’t have any problems with him nursing it. However, because that side has twice the production coming out of one spicket, I have milked that side out for a couple days after Siamese calves to mitigate any risk of mastitis/complications. I use it to store colostrum to freeze for other calves, to use as needed during calving season. (It is kind of amazing to milk it, because your cup fills very fast!) Siamese is a top-of-the-line female with one practical concern, easily managed at calving in many smaller ranch/farm scenarios. She raises very nice calves. Nt821 negative. I would like to sell Jefferson and Blacktail together, if possible.

Deanston is a cool looking brindle cow who is the first to catch your eye in the pasture. Everything about Deanston is hefty – she is a big boned, thick, deep, big horned gal. Deanston is a wonderful mother. She has a gorgeous heifer calf on her who will be weaned in early 2025 (she was just born) and who will be retained as a replacement. Deanston is a bit bossy at calving time, but nothing unmanageable. Her biggest flaw is that she has a lot of scar tissue on a hind quarter, presumably from untreated mastitis previous to our ownership, and she had mastitis at calving in that quarter this year. We treated her for mastitis and she has been a champ – never offering to kick when milked out in that quarter. Deanston may be most suitable for a “stopping traffic” as a well-cared-for yard ornament or she would make a cool business mascot. She is not a pet, but is easy to handle. We plan to keep her open this year. If her new owner intends to breed her, they will need to plan to assist her with the udder for a week or so after calving and have a maternity pen, etc. She has three quarters that function well and she has plenty of milk. Deanston will go only to a home prepared to meet her calving needs (and try to improve udder quality in her offspring by selecting the right bulls) or ready just enjoy her presence for the awesome beast she is. We do have a companion who is similar to Deanston that we would offer the perfect home.

Jefferson is a thick, moderate framed young cow who should add longevity and functionality to your herd. She had a very nice black heifer calf in 2023 that was in our 2023 fall production sale and was one we should probably have kept. This year she has a nice yellow bull calf at side. She has calved without assistance. Jefferson really prefers to be left alone when she calves (she was very protective of her calf this year when she calved in the stall and run). Jefferson has great udder suspension and appropriate milk production. Teat size has been fine, although the teat on one front quarter is a bit larger this year than the others. Jefferson’s grandmother calved here at Highland Spice in 2023 at 15 years old and was in great shape and required no assistance with her calf at that age, then bred back for another calf. Jefferson’s dam inherited those maternal traits, and Jefferson seems like the kind to be a easy keeping, productive cow for years to come. Jefferson is easy to handle but isn’t a pet. Nt821 negative. I would like to sell Jefferson and Blacktail together if possible.

Jillian is our bull Hickory’s maternal sibling. (Hickory was the 2022 National Champion Bull.) Their mother, CBS Rosanna, is a lovely cow who goes back to Highland Spice Saffron – a bull we raised in the first herd. Saffron’s dam, Goodwill Zila, was imported from Ontario bred to DH White Gold, and was one of our favorite cows in the first herd. When the opportunity arose to buy Rosanna from Cobblestone Farm at the NWSS sale, we didn’t hesitate! Jillian is a carrier of nt821 which was inherited from her sire, Champion of Tatlayoko. We are fortunate to have two daughters from Jillian in the Highland Spice herd (and her little sister) and couldn’t be happier with them. Jillian’s daughter Lillian of Highland Spice won her division in Denver in 2024 and has exceptional depth and easy fleshing ability. Jillian is functional, attractive, a great producer, and has a nice udder and good feet. She is gentle – one we can brush and pour in the pasture, walk in alone on foot, etc. Jillian was protective this year when she calved, but we believe that to be mostly circumstantial, as she was fine her heifer year. (This year we had to bring her calf in on the back of the side-by-side with her following, because the creek was flooding, which may have contributed to her nervousness.). Jillian has the classic look everyone loves and is one you would be proud to show off. We will be picky about where Jillian goes.

Kaneli is a traditional type, super hairy, smaller framed young cow from Snowland in Michigan. Kaneli is on the wilder side, although when we bought her as a calf she was on a halter and led into the trailer in a gas station parking lot. Kaneli has really embraced Wyoming’s wide-open spaces and would like left alone to be a cow. She isn’t crazy but is “watchy” when penned with other cattle and hasn’t been aggressive under any circumstances. But, she is not a cuddly one. I think her nervousness stems from being shy. Kaneli must go with another female that she is likely to along with (i.e. Kit, Blacktail, Jefferson, Laurel, Yennefer). I wouldn’t make her travel alone. She hasn’t been hard to get in as long as she has a buddy, but she is nervous if alone in the corral or in the chute. Udder looked good this year when she calved, although we are not sure why she lost her calf. It was normal size and looked healthy, but dead when we got to it. We suspect as a heifer she may have not stood fast enough to get the sac off the nose. Kaneli’s feet might get long if you don’t have hard ground/very much walking in your operation. Her feet have worn off fine here, although they were long when we got her as a calf. Nt821 negative.

“MJ” is an easy-going bull with great outcross value. His sire is our old herd bull HRH Attilah the Hun – sire to many banner winners in Denver in the 1990s and early 2000s. We imported Attilah from the then famous Hawk Ridge Highlands in Ontario in the early 1990s. Attilah has very old, unique bloodlines which remain unique in the gene pool in US Highlands today. Hawkridge did not sell much to the USA. MJ is very “Scottish” looking and has the BEST disposition. His dam is from the Flatheads Ostag cow line, which goes back to the first Highland Spice herd. That line is a foundation line in the new herd. Mountain Juniper has great feet and is the sweetest bull in the pasture. We suspect he will produce some very deep, pretty “old style” traditional females. MJ has a tremendous hair coat, is easy to get along with, and is going to make some super nice, unique calves. He would be perfect for a smaller, hands-on operation as he enjoys being around people.
